The air raid my Dad describes on 2nd December is called the second Pearl Harbour. It involved 105 German Junkers Ju 88 bombers and sank 17 ships killing more than 1,000 American and British servicemen and hundreds of civilians. There was also a lucky hit on the John Harvey which was carrying 2,000 mustard bombs to be used in case Hitler resorted to chemical warfare. The gas released caused burns which were misdiagnosed and led to many deaths of people uninjured by the bombing raid. This was covered up by the Allies. A direct result of this was the banning of chemical weapons use during war. It also led to a new treatment for cancer when a doctor observed the increase of white blood cells in patients caused by exposure to the gas.
