The Eclipse

The Eclipse

In ancient China sages thought
A dragon consuming the sun, the cause.
People would shout ‘Spit it out!’
Said monster always did.

Scientists wrote in learned journals
This one would eclipse the rest.
Darkness would now descend.
All life on earth must end.

Some people wept, many prayed,
Others drank ‘To oblivion!’
Despite the pleas ‘Spit it out!’
Leviathan finally swallowed.

Waking, to hungovered nightmare.
That first dark morning, most prayed.
Some smug, sported tee-shirts
With dayglo captions, ‘I told you so’
